Frequently Asked Questions

Some common questions about Children's Centres.
1. Can anyone go to a children's centre?
Children's centres are for anyone who cares for children under 5 years old. There are 58 Sure Start Children’s Centres in Surrey and each area in Surrey has its own centre. To find your local centre you can check Surrey County Councils web page here. Sometimes there are activities in the school holidays for older siblings of under-5s as well.
2. Do the centres offer childcare?
Some centres have childcare facilities. Contact your local centre for details
3. I need a good childminder in my area. Can my local children's centre help me?
Yes, your local centre will have information on childminders in the area. Or you can contact the Surrey Family Information Service (FIS) on 0300 200 1004 or at
4. Can I just turn up, or do I have to book for activities and events at the children's centre?
Some activities need booking beforehand, and some you can just turn up. It is always best to contact the centre you are visiting before you go just to be sure.
5. I have heard that parents can get involved in the running of children's centres. Is this correct?
Yes, all the centres have volunteers who help out, and there are groups of parents and carers who help the centre provide the best facilities for the area.
6. I am new to the area. Is a children's centre a good place to find out about local facilities for children or should I go elsewhere?
Your local children's centre is the best place to start when you are new to an area. There is advice, support, fun activities and friends to be made there as well as information about your area.
